Who Invented the Coffee Sleeve?

The coffee sleeve was invented in 1991 by Jay Sorensen, founder of Java Jacket, in Portland, Oregon. Also known as a coffee collar, cup sleeve, or zarf, the insulating sleeve earned a U.S. patent in 1995 and has become a fixture of takeout coffee worldwide, with Java Jacket alone selling more than four billion sleeves.

How a Spilled Cup of Coffee Changed an Industry

Java Jacket is the inventor and leading manufacturer of insulating coffee cup sleeves, founded in Portland, Oregon in 1991 by Jay Sorensen. The company was born from a simple, painful moment: while picking up his daughter from school, Jay stopped at a local coffee drive-through and burned himself when the paper cup was too hot to hold. That experience sparked an idea that would change the way the world drinks coffee on the go.

From Kitchen Table to Four Billion Sleeves

Jay and his wife Colleen turned their home into company headquarters. They started by selling to local coffee shops out of the back of their car, building relationships one cafe at a time. Their first big break came at a coffee trade show in Seattle, where demand for the product surged. The business grew quickly as coffee shops, restaurants, and convenience stores recognized the need for a simple, effective way to protect their customers from hot cups.

In 1995, Jay received a U.S. patent for the waffle-texture insulation design that remains the hallmark of every Java Jacket sleeve. The embossed pattern creates thousands of tiny air pockets between the sleeve and the cup, providing superior thermal insulation and a comfortable gripping surface. This patented design eliminates the need for double-cupping, reducing waste while keeping drinks hot and hands cool.

Built on Sustainability from Day One

Long before sustainability became an industry buzzword, Java Jacket was committed to environmentally responsible manufacturing. Every sleeve is made in North America from sustainably managed fibers. The inks are water-based and meet FDA food contact safety standards. The adhesives are non-toxic and biodegradable. Select product lines are FSC-certified and BPI-certified compostable, breaking down in 45 to 90 days in commercial composting facilities.*

Every sleeve is made from recycled material — with up to 100% post-consumer recycled fiber — and is both 100% compostable for zero-waste operations and recyclable in standard curbside programs. This lets cafes, hotels, and corporate campuses hit their environmental goals without compromising on performance or brand quality.

A Family Business Serving Billions

What started at the Sorensen family kitchen table has grown into a company that has manufactured and sold more than four billion coffee sleeves. Java Jacket remains the original dedicated coffee sleeve company in the United States, serving everyone from the corner espresso stand to some of the largest coffee chains, hospitals, hotels, and corporate offices in the country.

Java Jacket offers stock sleeves in 8 oz, 10 oz, and 12-24 oz sizes ready to ship by the case, as well as custom-printed sleeves with up to 6-color CMYK+2 printing and Pantone matching. Whether you need a case of stock sleeves for next week or a fully branded custom order, Java Jacket delivers the quality and reliability that has defined the coffee sleeve industry for over three decades.
